Well, Internet Explorer for Mac is dead and it looks like Windows users will be stuck with IE6 for a while… not much to look forward to. Zeldman has written a good analysis on the situation.

dunno about mac, I think safari is the future, but on windows users are not ‘stuck’ with IE. like the article is mentioning there are plenty of different alternatives. didn’t try opera yet (version 7 is very good people told me), but for me the latest Firebird is doing everything i need both on linux and windows. it’s lightning fast, supports transparent png ;) and has several tools included (like the fast “/” search, the many extensions you can add, the 30 theme packages, tabbed browsing and much more) and yet this is only a 0.6 pre release! if things go well, IE will be wiped out in a year or so ;)

Don’t bet on it. IE may lose a couple of percent of the market but that’s as far as it will go. Microsoft is the default, and that’s what most people will stick with. Lots of people don’t even know they can download another browser.

well that could change ;) i’ve seen the alternative browsers grow from really nothing to nearly 10% in the logs of my tiny webpage last year. ok, ‘wiped out’ is a bit overstated, but in time things can change fast. now that we all know MS stopped the IE development, i’m pretty convinced the alternatives may find their way to the end user. those alternative browsers will gain more attention in media or else, simply because of the fact IE isn’t ‘cool’ anymore and without real new features. everything about IE has been said yet ;) ah, we’ll see. after all, I’m glad the alternative browsers got more attention lately, something quite unimaginable 1-2 years ago. the only way is up ;)
